As I said in my first response to these "abbreviations" questions, IF you
are writing NARRATIVE, the most desirable way to maintain flow and
transition is to insert and view as your text the spelling as it is found in
the originating source, and then follow that in brackets or parentheses with
what you guess/think it might also mean.  The customary rules of formal
writing and explanation are as Mrs. Mills said, however those rules often
bring about a breach and temporary digression in narrative that is not
helpful in narrative/story-telling.
