Speaking of cemeteries - Along the south side of State Route 5, traveling
East, approximately three or four miles east of Evelynton Plantation is
situated the church, Evelynton Church, still maintained, in use, and
beautiful. The small cemetery there contains ancient grave
markers/headstones marked Eppes.
Would any listers know of any specific Eppes buried there?
Thomas Jefferson inherited several Eppes as in-laws upon his marriage to
Martha Wayles Skelton.
John Wayles, Martha's father, owned and lived at The Forest Plantation which
is further East, removed slightly from what is now S.R. 5, but not too
distant from Evelynton Plantation and Church.
The surname Eppes is sprinkled all through the Wayles, then Jefferson
family's correspondence and other papers.
The Eppes were in-laws of Jefferson through the marriage of Martha's sister
Elizabeth to Francis Eppes. Forevermore that name, Eppes, reappears, and is
attached to both Wayles and Jefferson families.....
I feel sure those buried at Evelynton Church are attached to this history,
but have no Christian names to trace.
Would appreciate any steerage.
Thanks, Jim Sullivan
