"The Yankees Are Coming": Union Cavalry to reenact historic raid in Goochland County

Return to the harrowing days of 1864 when Union cavalry troopers under the command of Col. Eric Dahlgren terrorized the Goochland countryside as they made their way to Richmond to free Union prisoners and kill Jefferson Davis and his cabinet. On September 27-30, 2012, more than 100 mounted troops from the 2nd US Cavalry, Company A/9th Regiment Virginia Cavalry, Company D (www.secondcalvary.org) will trace the original route of the raid. A battle reenactment will take place on Sunday, September 30, at Tuckahoe Plantation to provide an up close and personal look at local history.

Sponsored by the Goochland County Historical Society (www.goochlandhistory.org), the event is part of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The Dahlgren's Raid reenactment is being staged in 2012 to avoid scheduling conflicts with other Cavalry events scheduled for 2013 - 2015. A brief video discussion of the event is available through live stream of the July 24, 2012 Goochland school board meeting at www.glnd.k12.va.us beginning 8:30 into the recording.
