Go to www.scottishdocuments.com and try a surname search using all the ways
your last name was spelled. It is hard to say one way or the other unless you
come up with some documentation. As well as Macrae I also have Frith/Thrift as
ancestors and they apparently left Scotland for England at some point and
emigrated with the Jamestown VA settlers.
There are genealogical services in Scotland and England but everyone
including the government charges for just about everything so expect to pay.
