Subject: Re: drovers and wagoners
US 50 from Winchester, VA to east of Cincinnati was VERY rough and
extremely difficult for horses pulling wagons. That, by reason of the
difficult mountains of WV and eastern Ohio. Many westward bound
travelers opted to pass through Cumberland Gap or go north to the Old
National Road, thence west. Of course those in N. NC or S. VA could
go South and across US 70 through Crab Orchard Gap and on to N.
central TN to Nashville, etc.

Paul, thanks for your reply. Could you reply with thoughts
on paragraph two and three of my original message? If you
look at a map of WV, VA....Rt 50 is a shorter route west (to
eastern Ohio) than going up to MD and PA. Was the current
route 50 negotiable?
M.
