In 1835 Monroe Co. was in VA, so I'm posting this question to the VA-Roots
list, as well as to the Monroe Co. WV list. I'm mainly asking the question
below to find out if the Bland women mentioned below are or are not
descendants of one or two Maxwell sisters, also mentioned below.

The website http://www.wvculture.org/history/agrext/gapmills.html posts a
book that mentions Gap Mills WV (formerly VA) and several people petitioning
Union church in 1835 to allow them to form a new church (Carmel). It names
the petitioners who want to do it and says all but two were descendants of
these four Maxwell sisters:

Margaret Maxwell m. Thomas Steele
Isabelle Maxwell m. Owen Neel
Elizabeth Maxwell m. Andrew Crosier
Hannah Maxwell m. Robert Dunbar

The book said that they were of Scotch descent, Presbyterian, came there
from Pennsylvania about 1790 and lived as neighbors.

Assuming that the statement about all but two being descendants of the
sisters is correct, does anyone know who among the petitioners (named below)
are the two people who are NOT descendants of these four sisters and their
husbands? Notice that most have the last name of Steel, Neel (or O'Neel),
Crosier, and Dunbar. Seven do not: Rebecca Bland, Agnes Kitchen, Julia
Smith, Alice Patton, Margaret Jarvis, Isabelle Gilchrist, and Margaret Bland
(these names on the list below are preceded by the mark ->).

The names of the petitioners were

Abner Neel,
Robert Dunbar,
John Steele,
Thomas Dunbar,
-> Rebecca Bland,
Hannah Dunbar,
Adam Crosier,
Wm. Dunbar,
George Steele,
James Crosier,
Sarah Steele,
Elizabeth Crosier,
Mary Neel,
Elizabeth Dunbar,
-> Agnes Kitchen,
-> Julia Smith,
Rebecca Neel,
Mary A. Dunbar,
Owen Neel,
Jno. O'Neel, (O'Neel indicates grandchild of Neel) Jno. Crosier, Margaret
Neel, Nancy Dunbar, Margaret Dunbar,
-> Alice Patton,
Wm. Crosier,
Sarah Crosier,
Jane Steele,
-> Margaret Jarvis,
-> Isabelle Gilchrist,
Samuel Steele,
Edith Steele,
Wm. H. Neel,
-> Margaret Bland,
Thos. Steele,
and Jno. M. Dunbar.

The book that is on the website mentioned at the beginning of this post is
Brief History Of Gap Mills Community, by C. C. Ballard, published 1925.
