"Genealogy Without Documentation is Nothing" - Paul Drake

Here are the censi for Branch Hatcher.......

1810 ChesterfieldCo, VA census, Roll M252-67, p 63, Branch Hatcher, 1M 0-10,
1M 16-26, 1F 0-10, 1F 16-26, 9 slaves.

1820 ChesterfieldCo, VA census, p 206, Branch Hatcher, 1M 0-5, 2M 10-16, 1M
26-45, 3F 0-10, 2F 10-16, 3F 16-26, 1F 45+.

Branch was bn c1780 and died c1823 so was a relatively young man. Obviously
all the females in 1820 cannot be Branch's children but one of those males
10-16 could be the male 0-10 in the 1810.

We have only 2 proven sons, Francis E bn c1811 and Samuel B bn c1815.
Branch's first wife was old enough (to our best reckoning) to have had
children as early as 1802. We have no recorded marriage date for them.

But I do think I have to agree with Janet that another adult child would
likely have some say in the distribution of the estate, even if he had
already rec'd his share of the estate. It must also be pointed out that the
date of this court order was Nov 1825 and it is my understanding that these
court order dates represent the "conclusion" of the case and NOT the filing
date. Susan may have filed this case shortly after Branch died c1823. If
that is the case and there was an adult son wandering around, he would need
to be born 1802, otherwise as a minor he would have been listed along with
the 6 other minor children.

It seems to me I'm talking myself into a corner here showing why it is less
and less likely that Branch had an older son. The timing seems way too
tight.

Cheers,
Nel
