Nancy, I too have an ancestor James Bates married to Winifred Hix! I am just 
starting to research this line so I may be back in touch, hoping they are 
one in the same. I certainly did not know he might have been a sheriff.

Where would be the best place to look for a list of Halifax County

sheriffs, beginning with the first, when the county was formed in 1752 or as

soon

thereafter as the office began to be used.
