Hi, again, Susan. That woman was almost certainly an indentured servant or
one who had been sent to Samuel by action of the vestry. That payment
ordered was compensation for her being in his household for a few days to a
couple of weeks before giving birth, depending on how sick she was in those
final days of pregnancy, and were also for a short period after delivery;
that is if all went well with her.

Short of a further court order or entry that Samuel was to further support
that mother/servant. It may be that there was an entry in the Vestry
records revealing that the church had taken notice of the problem. I don't
remember whether or not those vestry records are extant?????

Paul

Subject: Re: [VA-ROOTS] Addition to list of brick walls - Oldham

Here's another brick in the wall:

OLDHAM, Edward b.d. & place unknown, m. 1791 Sarah DISHMAN. Inherited land
King George Co. VA 1791 from Samuel OLDHAM, magistrate & judge Westmoreland
and King George counties. Edward was a member of the vestry of Hanover
Parish, King George Co. VA. Edward d. 1795 King George Co. VA. Only clue
I've been able to find,, and it may be irrelevant after all, is a 1759 entry
in the Westmoreland Co Court Order Books. A bondwoman of Samuel's was
brought before the court and order to be whipped due to the birth of an
illegitimate child and her bond extended due to the "trouble" caused to his
household by her lying in. Could the child have been Edward? Birth date
could fit. Can't prove it or find his parents. Any ideas?
