Carolyn -

No, I have not joined and my application never got further than the local chapter or state level - if that far... I believe the local registrar called state to see if they could accept it and was told 'no' not without a birth certificate. This was in Richmond, Virginia, and many years ago - just never tried again although I have continued to attempt to locate my father's records. I have checked 1. Cherokee District Court 2. Whitfield County Court 3. Clarke County Court (where my father was in the Univ. of Georgia 4. Fulton County Court where my mother lived and my father 'partied' out of law school 5. the Navy - I don't know where else to look. I feel sure the records were in my grandfather's papers, however they were burned with the tenant house and all the beautiful old furniture!
IF I wanted to join, I would join ONLY as a member-at-large (at least until we relocated in E. Tennessee) under Col. John Cunningham's sterling record as commander of the Georgia militia at the Battle of Cowpens (he was Major then), whose line is completely proven on my mother's side. However the most challenging of my proven soldiers was on my father's side, and I was the one who proved his service in the Congressional Records, so am most proud of Captain William York who formed his own 'troop of horse' in Randolph County, N.C., however this is closed to me since its on my father's side.
Carolyn thanks for checking... we lived in McLean when we first moved to Virginia, then bought a house in Fairfax - then moved to Powhatan County, just 30 miles west of Richmond.
Oh, the local UDC also said not to bother to apply... although both of my father's grandfathers were CSA.

  Hi,
I would still like to help you. I just spoke to the Head of the Department at
DAR. Apparently you have not submitted an application. As I said before, the
DAR is really a nice organization. Its attitudes vary from place to place
locally; but that should not preclude anyone who is eligible to join. Having
ones lineage "on file" is a great help to future genealogists.
