It could be the person was a "Black sheep" or the crime was against this
cousin of hers.

Subject: [VA-ROOTS] Degree of cousins

Is there any significance placed on the fact that someone is described as
someone else's own cousin? Would it mean first cousin?

The year was 1833 and in a deposition Mr. A. has been taken into custody.
Mr. B. says he does not want his wife to know about it because Mr. A. was
his wife's own cousin and it might upset her.

I am trying to establish the degree of kinship.
