Declaration of James Tarrant [Revolutionary pension application]: "I
was born in Pennsylvania [Pittsylvania] County, Virginia last day of
November 1753. When very young, my father moved to Amherst County,
Virginia, where he lived for fifteen years and removed to Henry County
on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. After the War, I resided
in Henry County three or four years. In 1787, my father moved to
Greenville County, South Carolina."
James's father was Leonard Tarrant Sr, who died in 1791 in 96
District, South Carolina. Augusta Fothergill, _Virginia Tax Payers
1782-1787_, lists Leonard Tarrents, 1 poll, 4 slaves, in Henry County.
Also John Tarrent and Rubun Tarrent, 1 poll, 0 slaves each, Henry
County. This must be Leonard Sr. and his two sons John and Reuben;
Leonard Jr. had died 1777. Leonard Sr's 8 known children were
Benjamin, Elizabeth, Leonard, Nelly, Samuel, John, James, and Reuben.
It is possible that he also had sons Kerby and Carter, though they are
not mentioned in his will.
Another researcher has found documents under the name of Leonard
Tarrance Vicus, who is quite likely to be the same man (though I have
no idea where the "Vicus" came from):

"26 June 1750 SARAH VICUS, wife of the said LEONARD, did this day, in
open Court relinquish unto JOHN FOSTER her right of dower."
"We now know that the earliest confirmed record for LEONARD
TARRANCE/TARRANT was with the surname VICUS. Presumably, his 1742
survey was registered under his triple name, since the patent had that
nomenclature several years later.
1742 Survey - LEONARD TERRENCE VICUS
1744/5 Patent - LEONARD TERRENCE VICUS - Louisa Co.
1745 Listed on road order - LEONARD TARRANCE - Orange Co.
1748 Survey - LEONARD TARRANCE - Lunenburg Co.
1749/50 Deed - LINARD TARRANCE VICUS, also called
LINARD TARRANCE, to John Foster - Louisa Co.
1750s Various Records - Halifax (formerly Lunenburg) Co. - LEONARD TARRANCE
1755 Patent - John Foster. Adjacent line of
LEONARD TARRANT VICUS, also called
TARRANT"
Has anyone on this list ever seen any further information about
Leonard? Does he connect with the Leonard Tarent of Essex Co who d.
1718 leaving a dau. Mary (m. the Rev. Robert Rose) and a son Leonard
who subsequently disappears from the records entirely?
