Listers,
Several years ago I had occasion to read the Chesterfield Co. Order Books
page by page, looking for some data on several of my families there. In
the process I made notes on all of the court orders for support of
illegitimate children from the period 1804-1834. This is the list. Keep in
mind that these were only the ones who made it to Court, usually because
the mother was unable to support the child without help or because the
father was about to be married to another woman. If these children appeared
in later court records, their surname would have been that of their mother.
Unfortunately, except for two, the original orders did not give the child's
age, sex, or first name.
