Are any of your Savages spelled Savedge? My great-grandmother was Julia Ann
Savedge Cotten, daughter of Jesse Savedge of Surry County. Her name was
pronounced Savage and spelled that way sometimes, although I think the Surry
County Savedges always spelled it Savedge.

Thank you Sondra.
I do not know of the James Savage who married Winifred Williams in KY.
James Oliver Savage was born in Gates Co., NC on July 24, 1845 and was the son
of Corday Young Savage and Mary Perry, BUT, he married (1) Indianna Williams in
Nansemond Co. and had my grandmother (Harriet Belle Savage); Indianna was the
daughter of Washington G. Williams and Marcia King. Washington G. Williams was
the son of Moses Williams and Jemima Hines. Indianna Williams Savage died in
Nansemond Co., on Sept 5,1873. James Oliver Savage then married her younger
sister, Mary, (called Molly) and they had Beulah who married William Hatcher
Eley. After Molly died, James Oliver married a third time to Ellen Estelle
Shea; they had a son Aubrey Savage. James O. Savage died in 1906 and is buried
in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk. In the same plot are Ellen, Aubrey, my
grandparents Julius McGruder Lassiter & Hattie Belle Savage Lassiter, and one of
their sons, Stanley .
My trouble with Nansemond County is back before these people. I know members of
my family have been there for generations, and I must be related to half the
people in Suffolk. And people went back and forth between Nansemond and Gates
Counties. James Oliver's grandfather, Pryor Savage, is listed as "of Nansemond"
when he married (1) Joanna Hudgins. He then married (2) Margaret Lewis, and she
is my gg grandmother.
