Many Native People of the Powhatan Federation lived in VA and surrounding areas. You also had the Miquon, Cherokee, Shawnee, and other tribes hunting and traveling to and fro these same areas. And, you will also find that many slaves jumped off the many ships as they came near to the same shores. I have a way distant cousin way back then whose name was Keziah 'Kizzy' (COBB) CLUBB... who was a Cherokee Medicine Woman. She was of the English COBBS and of one of the local Cherokk mixed-blood women. She was very powerful.

Hope this helps some.
