the employees were unaware of certain records, and they do

could we get out hands on those records?"

I have run into this problem also.  Courthouse employees
are not historians and they often have no knowledge of the
very old records.  Before going to a courthouse it might be
a good idea to contact the local genealogical or historical
society and locate someone who is knowledgeable about local
records.
