I would encourage you all to at least get a yDNA test to 25.  I was able to confirm that the Joseph McCarty and James C. McCarty in the 1820 Rockbridge County census were brothers.  Probably so were John and Justin McCarty of that county.  Now it has also been suggested that this McCarty family and McCartney families of the area are also related.  The DNA evidence works WITH other data and should not be used alone.
