In 1769 the first of two transfers of territory from Nansemond to Isle of
Wight County took place when all lands west of Chuckatuck Creek went to
the latter. In 1772 the territory known as Rascow's Neck was also transferred
to Isle of Wight administration.

Southampton Co. was formed 20 May 1749 from the southwestern part of Isle
of Wight County. Then in 1785 the lands of Nansemond County, South of
the Nottoway and Blackwater rivers, were cut off and added to Southampton.
