Actually, there are some dates that goes back to the 1950s in the online
SSDI but as a rule of thumb, you won't find "all" prior to 1980 and gets
sketchy and sketchier each year you go back from there. I've been using the
database for many years and like any, have to be careful with what it shows.
Unless it has a V next to the death date (meaning verified), it could be off
by a day or so and birth date too. Depends on what the SS office has on
file when the cardholder obtained their card. Years ago people sometimes
had no birth certificate (and didn't require one to obtain a card) to know
their exact date of birth and as the years went by may have learned it and
could be different than what is posted. Just like headstones can have
different dates going by the "informant" info.

On the other hand the Death Index for Wisconsin is available at Ancestry.com
and starts in 1959 and goes to 1997 and Wayne already found that for you -
which there are others with that last name also in the database.
Misspellings is another thing with transcribed handwritten documents. BAYF
is Bayfield County, WI.
Bernice L. Quirin, died 10-22-1960 age 51 also in Bayfield County also
listed.

When confronted by a difficult problem, you can solve it more easily by
reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger have handled
this?" - Unknown

Madeline,

Are you aware that the SSDI contains records only from the early 60s [don't
remember exact year] to the present?

If your Fred died in WI in 1959, he will not show up on the SSDI files.

It's always necessary to read the details of exactly what is and is not
contained in any database.
