"Rethinking Captain John Smith's Map of Virginia," a lecture by Dr. Stephen R. Potter, Regional Archeologist, National Capitol Region, National Park Service, on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at the Scott House, Virginia Commonwealth University, 909 West Franklin Street.

Captain John Smith's 1612 Map of Virginia is one of America's most famous colonial maps. By using historical linguistics, historical chronology, and new interpretations from ethnohistory and anthropology, Dr. Potter transfors Smith's from a static geographical representation of Indian sttlements to a dynamic cultural landscape unpon with to interpret a rapidly changing aborigonal world.

Dr. Stephen Potter is the author of Commoners, Tribute, and Chiefs: The Development of Algonquian Culture in the Potomac Valley. He has also appeared on the Learning Channel and the History Channel.
