Thanks, James.  My readings over the years revealed widespread fear of being entangled in the "gulf weed", since rescue was next to impossible.  I appreciate knowing that weeds may have been less a problem than the lack of winds of substance in the area west of France and England and east of our mid-Atlantic colonies.  Paul

  Actually less a weed problem than the calm so typical of the centers of
  all semi-permanent high pressure cells such as that found in the general
  area of Bermuda (called the Bermuda High).
