I am in daily contact with the Navy via their veteran website - so far none of my father's records have been found, and I continue to fill them in as I find information.
However, don't think that I have not tried everything I can think of to find that record or to create new documents... seems like if there is a legal document 'out there' it is up to me to find it although I have been trying to find it for years and years. Cherokee County no longer exists, although the Circuit Court was held in Whitfield County where I have had several people look for me, but their records are not complete - lost some during the war, so watch out! If you live in Whitfield County, Georgia don't tell me! Even a cousin who lives not far away looked for the records in Whitfield, but could not find them - afterwards I told her that it was Cherokee Circuit Court and that if any records survive they will be in Dalton. Recently she had back surgery so is 'out of the loop' for now!
Oh, I imagine that my grandfather acted as the 'attorney' but all his records were burned in the old house where they were stored after his death, thought to be arson - lawyers can make bitter enemies.
I do not live in Atlanta or even nearby so having the records changed without hiring an attorney, will not go over with my genealogy uninterested husband - he humors me with dues to different sites... but he will go only so far.
Basically, I just think that the orgs are way behind in their record handling - what will they do with all the 'un-married' parents in the future... even The Mayflower Society is accepting DNA results for membership - however I am not male!
Sounds like I am just not trying very hard, however I am just worn out from it, and now simply do not care to join. It just doesn't make sense that they will accept census and other information for our older ancestors, but not for parents born in the country with a doctor who simply does not care to obey the laws!

Re: looking for birth certificate/wrong name
My mother's birth certificate is in a different name than that she has
used since she was 5 years old, plus it was wrong even for her birth
name. When she went to get a passport, she had to get a correction to
her birth certificate. Luckily she had a few aunts still living. They
just wrote a notarized statment saying that my mother is the person named
on that birth certificate, and that she has used her current name almost
since birth. You can ask Vital Statistics about getting a correction
made.
Re: loss of naval records.
You might ask again. I heard that copies of a number of records thought
to be burned have been found. I think they were found in St. Louis.
