If you have a notebook computer the best, easiest and most useful method is
to obtain a Delorme Earthmate GPS that operates from the USB of the notebook.
It is very small and interacts with the very good Delorme computer map of the
US. I have used this arrangement in the US plus (using scanned maps) in Central
America. You can find it at Delorme's web site.
