One of my ancestors was a brickmason (as well as a farmer) in the 1800's
.
During the war, he was detailed for brickwork on a hospital (he was in
26th Va., Co. G ).
I have several questions about masonry which I hope someone can answer
or point me in the right direction :
A brickmason is more skilled than a bricklayer or brickmaker?
The terms brickmaker and bricklayer are self-explanatory. What does a
brickmason do?
During the 1800's would they learn their trade by going to a larger city
such as Richmond?
Were brickmasons considered artisans and were any type of records kept?

And to show my total ignorance on the subject <big grin!>, is a
brickmason a freemason or is the only connection the term 'mason?'

Thanks in advance
Lyn
