This is in response to a recent message on Va-Roots about how to
identify titles of newspapers for Virginia localities, but this is also
a topic of frequent interest for Va-Hist subscribers, too.

There is a nifty online database that lists all of the Virginia
newspapers that exist in original copies or microforms at four of the
state's principal libraries. It is found on the Library of Virginia's
Web site at

http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/vnp/

It will allow you to search by county and by city and town names to
identify newspapers for which copies are available, and it also allows
you see an item-level listing of which copies of which newspapers are
available where. For example, the July 4, 1976, issue of the Smalltown
Blast.

To reach that site, you can begin at the library's Home page, click open
the Site Index in the lower left corner, click open the letter N in the
alphabet, click open the Newspapers Home Page, and then click open
Newspapers in Virginia Bibliography.
