If the land tax records show a transfer of ownership after a death by dower, does that necessarily mean wife or can it refer to a child.  The male owner of the land appears regularly in the census living alone.  Also it took quite a while for the estate to be settled.  So I suspect it is a child.  But I have only heard of dower referring to a wife.  Thanks for your help.  --Sally Phillips
