The Archives Research Services Branch of the Library of Virginia is seeking
an experienced Archivist with outstanding patron-services skills to assist
state and local government officials, specialized researchers and
correspondents, and the general public by interpreting, evaluating, and
analyzing their research needs. The Public Service Archivist will apply
knowledge of Virginia history, historiography, and the holdings of the
archives in order to provide information necessary to answer inquiries and
to make available the archival records of the Commonwealth.

The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in US History, American
Studies, or Library Science with an emphasis in archives administration, or
ACA certification and formal experience in an archival institution;
considerable knowledge of Virginia or US history; of historical and
genealogical research methodology; of maps and their research use; and of
archival theory and practice. The position also requires demonstrated
ability to provide reference services in an archival repository, to speak in
public and to write effectively, to plan and carry out projects and prepare
publications, and to direct the work of others. Must be able to work with
the public on a sustained basis and as a team member. An equivalent
combination of training and experience may substitute for educational
requirements. Rotating Saturday public-service hours required.  Must pass a
security background check.
