early Albemarle Co. marriages

Albemarle County was formed in 1744, but the marriage records for that
county, according to the LVA web site, don't begin until 1780.  Can anyone
tell me why?  Do Albemarle marriage records for 1744-1779 exist somewhere
else (that is, OTHER THAN merely as "implied" marriages in wills, deeds,
etc.)?
