The personal property tax lists that I'm working with started in 1782
in Halifax County and are available on microfilm through 1850. I
don't know whether those taxes stopped then, or whether the taxes
continued after that, but the images are only available on microfilm
through then.

I'm not sure that the personal property tax lists are the same as the
"tithables" lists. I haven't found the word "tithable" in the
personal property tax lists that I've examined so far--1782-1832
Halifax Co. I've seen the word "tithables" used in published
transcriptions of lists in the 1750s and 1760s, but I've never looked
at any images of original records for that period.

I ordered these tax lists through an LDS Family History Center. So
far, I've looked only at Halifax Co, but just ordered the film for
Patrick Co. and learned that the Knoxville FHC already has the
Pittsylvania lists. The number of years on a particular roll of
microfilm varies greatly from roll to roll, so in some cases you may
have to order 4 films to cover the same years that are covered on 2
rolls in another county. In any case, I've found it to be money well
spent. Since the tax lists are for every year (1808 is an
exception), they can fill in a lot of information that you can't get
from the censuses. The type of information included varies from year
to year, making it crucial that the user check the headings for each
year. I even found a few cases where different categories were used
in the northern and southern districts in the same year. Used in
conjunction with the censuses, these tax lists are a powerful
research tool.
