It varied. On the Texas and Alabama pension applications I've seen,
the applicant often wrote something like "Birmingham, Jefferson
County, Alabama" or "Possum Valley, Shelby Co. Ala". But I've also
seen just "Shelby County Alabama" and "South Carolina".
