PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY FAMILIES

Historical Commission Requests Your Photographs

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA . .   The Prince William County
Historical Commission will sponsor a community event to collect
historical photographs and to document family life from 1900-1950.  The
event is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in
the One Room School House, Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre, 12229
Bristow Road in Bristow.  The event is free and open to the public.  

At the event, staff will electronically scan photographs and gather
supporting narrative materials.  A signed release form is required and
allows the Historical Commission to digitally scan and utilize the
electronic image and supporting documentation.  These images and
documents may then be used in a future book, planned to highlight local
history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with a focus on family
life.  Original photographs will be returned to owner on the day of the
event. 

The Historical Commission is sponsoring the community event as part of
the County's commemoration of May's Historic Preservation Month.  For

"PLACING OUT" AND THE ORPHAN TRAINS

Presented by Larry LeDoux

            Genealogist Larry LeDoux will present an overview of an
ignored part of U.S. history: the movement that transported and "placed
out" more than 200,000 destitute children from New York and other cities
to foster homes throughout the country, mainly to Midwest farms and
towns, during the period 1854 to 1929.

USING ASSOCIATES AND COLLATERALS TO

EXTEND ANCESTRAL LINES

Presented by Victor Dunn, CG

            Victor Dunn, CG, will present a case study of records of
associates and "collaterals" (in-laws, cousins and other near-relatives)
to illustrate the use of information to determine migration and
establish a family unit.  The lecture focuses on the methodology used in
"Reconstructing Parents from Indirect Evidence: Robert Dunn of Frederick
County, Virginia," which was published in the September 2006 issue of
National Genealogical Society Quarterly.  Potential records sources
naming associates and collaterals are also discussed.

DIGGING UP JOHN HEY (HAY)

Presented by Joan Hardter

            Genealogist Joan Hardter shares the process, including the
pitfalls and successes, of her search for her maternal
great-grandfather.  Someone who has heard her speak calls it "an
excellent primer for novices and certainly entertaining for those more
accomplished."
