Hi Randy,

I am interested in the Griffin families in Halifax County. My 6
Great Grandmother was Mourning (Griffin) Hudson. I have not been able to
find her parents.
Mourning Griffin b. abt 1735, married Peter Hudson, "SR" abt
1755, they had the following children: Charles Hudson, Peter Hudson, JR,
Grief Hudson, William Hudson, Susannah Hudson, Tabitha Hudson, Sarah
Hudson b.- 1756 (married Nathaniel Vasser in 1782 in Halifax Co., Va),
and Patty (Patsy) Hudson .
John Griffin b.- 1727 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., Va, died
before 1807 in Halifax Co., Va, left a will (Halifax Co, Va, Will Book 7,
Page 352, dated 7 Apr 1797, recorded 28 Sep 1807) in which he named his
children: Nancy Arrington, Mourning Griffin, Sally Jones, Betsy Jarratt,
Karen Griffin, John Griffin, Drucilla Vaughan, and Jane Wilson.
There must be another Mourning Griffin who married Peter Hudson, "SR" for
two reasons.
(1) The above John Griffin named all his daughter using their married
names except Mourning Griffin and Karen Griffin. Mourning Griffin who
married Peter Hudson, "SR" had been married about 42 years when this John
Griffin wrote his will in 1797, and he named his daughter Mourning
Griffin and not Mourning Hudson. as one might expect.
(2) Mourning Griffin who married Peter Hudson, "SR" was very close to the
same age as this John Griffin.
There must be another Griffin family in the generation of the above John
Griffin that had a daughter named Mourning Griffin. Probably John
Griffin’s daughter was names for an Aunt or second cousin.
If any one has seen a family with a daughter named Mourning Griffin born
around 1725-1740 please let me know where the records can be found. The
records may be found in Prince George Co., Va (Bristol Parish). I will
greatly appreciate any help.
Sincerely,
Reginald L. Vassar

P.S. The John mentioned above who must have been of the same generation
as Mourning (Griffin) Hudson had a will; a brief description which is
shown here.

THIS INFORMATION IN HALIFAX CO., VA. WILL BOOK 7, PAGE 352, DATED 7 APR
1787. THIS JOHN GRIFFIN IS PROBABLY NOT THE FATHER OF MOURNING GRIFFIN
WHO MARRIED PETER HUDSON, "SR". WHEN JOHN GRIFFIN WROTE HIS WILL IN 1797
HE NAMED HIS DOUGHTERS USING THEIR MARRIED SURNAMES EXCEPT FOR MOURNING
GRIFFIN WHEN HE CALLED HER MOURNING GRIFFIN. PETER HUDSON "SR" AND
MOURNING HAD BEEN MARRIED 40 YEARS WHEN THE ABOVE JOHN GRIFFIN WROTE HIS
WILL. THE MOURNING GRIFFIN WHO MARRIED PETER HUDSON "SR" MUST HAVE BEEN
OF THE SAME GENERATION AS JOHN GRIFFIN.
JOHN GRIFFIN'S RECORD WILL BE KEPT IN THE LINE UP UNTIL IT IS PROVEN ONE
WAY OR THE OTHER.
