What distinguished rangers from their militia counterparts during the
early part of the French and Indian War (say 1755-1758)? For example, was
it length of service? Neither was supposed to be ordered outside of
Virginia (unlike Washington's Virginia Regiment) although either could be
sent to another part of the colony.
