To VA-Hist and -Roots listserv members -

The next phase of the Library of Virginia's Chancery Records Index is ready
for testing and your feedback is being requested again. Fauquier County
Circuit Court has been the subject of a pilot project to digitize their pre-
1913 chancery records, and make the images available through the Chancery
Records Index. We would like you to "test drive" this image database for us
through the end of January, and let us know what you think by that time.
How functional is it? Are you able to find what you are looking for? Do
the images load in a reasonable amount of time? If you experience problems
with the program, please e-mail [log in to unmask] and include what
operating system, browser, and versions you are using.

Please be aware that some of these images are quite large. There are
340,222 images located among the 7,007 cases that comprise Fauquier
County's Chancery series. They range in file size from 6 Kilobytes to
3,977 Kilobytes (almost 4 MB), with the median file size being around 220
KB. If you are on a dial-up service most of these images will take some
time to download.

We have worked diligently over the past two years to bring this to you, and
we trust you will find it a useful tool in accessing the historic chancery
records of our Commonwealth. There will be a contract issued in the near
future to complete more of the localities. As they are completed, they
will be added to the database, with announcements going out as always to
these two listservs.

Thank you for your efforts in testing this new application. We look
forward to hearing your feedback, both positive and constructive.

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

With advanced functionality comes the need for more advanced computer
programs. The images are in .PDF and best viewed through the current
version of Adobe Acrobat, a free downloadable viewer. For Internet
Explorer users, version IE 5.5 or higher is required. For those using
Netscape, version 6.1 or higher is required. Due to limited funding and
time, this agency confined its testing to the two most commonly used web
browsers. Links to all of these are found on the Chancery Data Basic
Query web page.

There is a known issue with the way Netscape handles plug-ins that is
affecting the way the document images display in Netscape. Rather than the
image opening in the window provided, a second window opens for the image.
So while inconvenient, the issue does not affect the ability to view the
document. However, if you are using Pop-Up Stopper software it may prevent
the second window from opening. In that case the Pop-Up Stopper should be
disabled.

If you would like for the viewer to function as intended please follow
these instructions:
For Windows users, go to lower left corner of screen and click on Start -
Find - Files and type in nppdf32.dll, then click "Find Now" button. The
file should be located at “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0
\Browser\nppdf32.dll” if Acrobat Reader 5.0 is installed.
Windows users should copy this file to the plugins directory for Netscape.
This directory, by default, is located at “C:\Program
Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\Plugins”. Once added, this should allow the
Reader to open within Netscape 6. Please note, the user must restart
Netscape if it is open when the file is copied so that it can be recognized
properly.

To access the new format of the Chancery Records Index please follow this
link:
http://www.lva.lib.va.us/ChanceryWebQ/ChanceryBasicQuery1.asp#basicdatastart
That will take you to the test site. You will not be able to reach this
site using any previous bookmarks you have for the Chancery Records Index,
nor can you reach it from the CRI homepage. This is a hidden link, not
available to the general public.

To find the digitized records of Fauquier County, click on the drop down
box under the map on the test page found at the above link. Choose
FAUQUIER CO and then follow the next line of instructions. Once the
Results page has been returned to you, click on a link under "Index Number"
on the right. This will take you to the record-detail page, and from here
click on the link marked "Scanned." This will take you to the image-viewer
page where you can click on the individual pages listed on the left. It
will take a few seconds to load Adobe Acrobat Reader the first time.
