A friend has asked about occasional references found in early- or
mid-ninteenth century Virginia land tax returns to persons identified as
"FBM."

What was that abbreviation supposed to mean?

FPC meant "Free Person of Color" and FN meant "Free Negro" so did FBM mean
something like Free Black Male or Free Born Mulatto? How would we know?
