We have been trying for some time to find & document the ancestry of my gggg
grandfather Zachariah Peters. Zachariah Peters married Keziah Lively on 18
November 1794 in Amherst County, VA. On the marriage bond he is listed as
Zacharias.
Some people claim Zachariah to actually be "Jacob" Zachariah. But presently
no documentation has been uncovered in which the name Jacob is used.
Zachariah's father may have carried the surname of Peter instead of Peters.
But this has not been proven either.
Zachariah is found listed as a witness on a deed along with an Elisha Peters.
This is a very important document to date, as it is the only place we have
found Zachariah listed with a contemporary of the same surname. This is
probable evidence, be it only circumstantial, that Zachariah was somehow
related to Elisha. Information on the deed is as follows:
Amherst County, VA Deeds, 1761-1807, page 129:
7 Feb 1800. RICH. BREEDLOVE & wife MILDRED, to NELSON ANDERSON for $300, 180
acres branches S fork Rockfish. Lines: JNO. BALL, WM. KEY, Glade
Road, WM. CABELL, JAS. NEVIL. THOS. KEYS. Wit: ZACH. NEVIL, ELISHA
PETERS, ZACH. PETERS, CAREL EADS.
Marriage records for those listed in the deed have been searched for a
possible connection to Zachariah or his wife, Keziah Lively. Marriage
information found is as follows:
Richard Breedlove - Milley Watts 12/23/1789 Albermale County
Nelson Anderson - Agness Crawford 3/18/1799 Amherst County
John Ball - Susanna Hensley 12/7/1805 Albermale County
William Waller Key - Elisabeth Alford 12/20/1790 Amherst County
William H. Cabell, Jr. - Elizabeth Cabell 4/6/1795 Amherst County
Charles Eades - Sarah Bowler 8/3/1782 Amherst County
Elisha Peters - Jane Tiller 6/1/1792 Amherst County
Elisha Peters - Cynthia Turner 2/17/1806 Amherst County
We do not know if the 2 Elisha Peters, listed as marrying both Jane Tiller &
Cynthia Turner, were different people or the same person. No appropriate
marriage information on Thomas Keys was found.
More circumstantial evidence, that Zachariah might be related to Elisha,
comes from tax records. Zachariah is found listed in Amherst County tax
records in close proximity to Elisha & James Peters. In a research report,
Andrew S. Webb writes the following:
"Zachariah PETERS was born between 1765 & 1770 in Virginia. He likely moved
to Amherst County, Virginia from another Virginia County in 1793, marrying in
Amherst County the following year. It is likely that Zachariah was the
brother of Elisha and James PETERS, who lived near him in Amherst County, as
shown by tax records."
Amherst County marriage information on the three possible brothers is
recorded as follows:
Peters, Zacharias, bachelor, and Kesiah Lively, spinster, Nov 18, 1794.
Austin Woody surety. Certificate of marriage by Rev. Ezekiel Campbell.
Peters, Elisha, Bachelor, & Jane Tiller, spinster June 1 1792. Charles Watts
surety.
Peters, James, Bachelor, & Elizabeth Stevens, spinster, March 11 1793.
Barnett Stevens Surety & consent of Barnett Stevens.
Because of the changing of county lines through history, information on
Zachariah Peters, his ancestry & descendants may also be found in Albemarle,
Goochland, Louisa, Hanover or Nelson Counties of VA.
Can anyone help us find the parentage of Zachariah Peters? Thank you in
advance for any information or guidance. I look forward to reading your
E-mails.
Sincerely,
Mike Peters
