Shirley -

I must have missed the first of this query... however I live in 'Jefferson' although the original, and oldest town in the county was called 'Jefferson's Landing'... and last time I was down there the only thing left were two foundations - both of taverns since long after the 'civil' folk were gone the area became an over night stay for canal boat crews.

Why Jefferson? Well, Peter Jefferson, the father of President Thomas Jefferson, surveyed this area (with others) and lived in a small house which is still standing. It was being restored by a private owner until thieves came from the river entrance and stole everything worthwhile out of the house... to include original mantles, windows, etc. The own was so disheartened he locked the door and never went back. I have been in the house and the children's loft in the upstairs is very small and the ceiling height very low... don't know how older brother, now gone from home, managed to stand up straight in that space.

In the kitchen under the house you can still see the marks made by the cots slept in by the cook... along with all kind of animal prints in the constantly wet mud.

The site contains the deepest, still surviving dug well and it is still filled with water... but that place is so close to the river it does not surprise me,
