RELIC PROGRAMS
Here are our latest offerings. Funding for RELIC programs is provided
by the Friends of Central and Bull Run Libraries. Sign language
interpretation is available for Prince William Public Library programs

USING MAPS IN GENEALOGY
Presented by Corinna Hodges Nowak
Learn how a variety of maps, including USGS, fire insurance,
land grants, tax maps, plats, and more can help locate your ancestors,
particularly using online resources. Genealogist Corinna Hodges Nowak
will present an overview of the history of mapping in the U.S., along
with map sources and skills.

THE DARKEST NIGHT:
THE FIGHT AT FAIRFAX COURTHOUSE,
JUNE 1861
Presented by Ted Ballard
As the American Civil War got underway, a skirmish took
place outside the old Fairfax County Courthouse, on June 1, 1861.
Historian Ted Ballard will present an illustrated talk about this
little-known but significant event leading up to the first battle of
Manassas. The story includes a Union cavalry charge, the death of a
Confederate commander, a counter-attack led by a former Virginia
governor, and the award of a Congressional medal of honor.

THE WORLD WARS ON THE HOMEFRONT:
THE WORKBASKET CAMPAIGN
Presented by Karen C. K. Ballard
For over 30 years Karen Ballard has researched and collected vintage
international textile tools and 19th/20th century publications on the
manufacture and embellishment of textiles. She has contributed writings
to the Center for the History of American Needlework Newsletter and has
displayed portions of her extensive collections at Belle Grove
Plantation, the Fairfax Library, and the Loudoun County Museum.
One of her areas of specialization, the focus of this presentation and
its accompanying display, is the World War I and II 'Homefront'
manufacture of primarily knitted and sewn items for our fighting men and
European refugees.
The program will be presented at Bull Run Regional Library on Friday,
July 25 at 11 a.m. Items from her collections will be on display at
Bull Run Library throughout the month of July. To reserve a seat for
