A young woman seduced by an older, married man publicly turned the tables
on him in Richmond’s mean streets circa 1865. But did she also pull the wool
over the eyes of the courts and medical establishment? A Library of Virginia
archivist rediscovered the story of Annie Kirby’s tumultuous early life in the
records of Western State Hospital. See how, 144 years later, both the
archivist and Annie’s descendants were able to piece together her remarkable
life story in this week’s Out of the Box blog.
