"One of the tragedies of life is the murder of a beautiful theory by a brutal gang of facts" - La Rochefoucauld

Bonnie and HBG both verify my basic understanding of this tax exemption, which now leads to the next questions.

This Wm rec'd this exemption in 1755 and the record does not indicate whether he is a resident of Lunenburg or an absentee landowner.

He does not appear on the earlier 1748-50 Lunenburg tithe lists.

Would it be correct to assume he MAY not have lived in Lunenburg in 1755 but was an absentee landowner?

But in 1763 [8 yrs later] a Wm Hatcher OF Lunenburg purchases 100A from Wm Watkins.

These are the only 2 recs found for a Wm Hatcher in this county.

IF these Wms are the same person, it would seem strange that an elderly person would continue to be buying land 8 yrs later. The same would seem to be true if he were disabled.

But if they are the same person, would his previous exemption cover ALL lands he may own or purchase later? Seems the county might get a little perturbed at losing tax revenue from someone exempted who continues to accumulate land.

So, any thoughts on whether we have 1 or 2 Wm Hatchers?

Thanks!
Nel
