Anyone who has not read Martha Ballard's Diary (link at the dohistory.org website that Billie lists) is missing out on a great read. I bought the book years ago and thought it was one of the most interesting books I had ever read. It gives an understanding of just how hard things were in the early years of this country and its social mores.

Pay attention to the winter weather she mentions, this country was settled at the end of the Little Ice Age (1300-1850) and it is clearly shown in this diary.
