It was a matter of RIGHT.
Did the North have the RIGHT to invade sovereign states ?
OR,
Did the South have the RIGHT to secede from the Union ?

it says they signed on to Put Down the  Rebellion.

On the other hand the newspaper clipping I have from  Virginia says to 
'oppose the invasion from the  north
