I have seen Oak Hill on Va Library records as being within Caroline County.

On Lee's boyhood home, a FAMILY bought the home. They are putting quite a
bit of money into a property that taxpayers did not feel they could. It is
their private home now but through negotiations and an understanding of
people wanting access, this family will make it available once a week or once
a month for tours.

As with the unwillingness of county clerks to cooperate with people doing
genealogy this home was not supported by enough public monies. I feel for
those clerks having to take on work that the county does not support (as I do
with a family having to now open their home to strangers). Maryland has sunk
money into this and makes it easy for genealogists. Spotsylvania County on
the other hand is only recently gaining a tax base large enough to support
such efforts, IF the county residents agree to it. Please remember that
while records are public and should be available, if the taxpayers who set
the work agenda are not willing to financially support this, YOU must do the
footwork in order to get the info YOU need. Not everyone considers our
family history important to their work and we should appreciate that. It's
hard to venture across the country to do genealogy. I am grateful to the Va
Library for what they are putting online. But the Va Library and this List
for that matter are financed by the taxpayers of Virginia. Those of us not
living in that state are effectively getting a free-be. We can't expect
every locality to be able to do this.
