Joan,

Consider going to Google Books and searching on Oxendine genealogy or
Oxendine. You may have already done that, but in case you have not, see
below. There were a lot of results for the terms Oxendine genealogy that you
might be interested in seeing. Be sure to look at more than the first page
of results. Whether or not one of them items contains the answer to your
question about John Oxendine alias Figro or clues about it, I do not know.

I did not type the full text given for the Google result for the book
mentioned below, or the full text of the snippet view of it. For the Google
result, go to
http://www.google.com/search?q=figrow&tbm=bks&tbo=1#hl=en&ds=bo&sugexp=ldyml

=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=cf9eb01f1b86abe2. The snippet from the book
mentioned below and that is among the Google results is on this link:

esnum=8&sqi=2&ved=0CH4Q6AEwBw.

One of the results says, "[Oxendine, Hunt and Chavis, but not Goins, are
common Lumbee family names.]."

Another result which appears to mention your John Oxendine was for a book
entitled Free African Americans of North Carolina and Virginia: including
the family histories of more than 80% of those counted as "all other free
persons" in the 1790 and 1800 census." You get a better feel for what the
book might contain if you look at both the Google result and the snippet
view that you see when you click on the link. John1 Oxendine, born say 1694,
"alias Figro" brought a successful suit against Ann Houle/Holey and William
Wildey..."
