I am seeking information on this couple. Margaret Cornish was a "negro"
indentured servant in the household of Lt Robert Sheppard of Elizabeth City
Co., who had a relationship with a neighboring white planter named Robert
Sweete. This was in the time period 1640-42. He was forced to do public
penance at divine service for "begetting with child the negro servant of Lt
Robert Sheppard", and she was sentenced to be whipped - this did not
apparently prevent them from having another child as well, however.
I would like to find out if Margaret Cornish was one of the original
Angolans sold to the Jamestowners by the Dutch in 1619 (she is supposed to
have been born about 1610). I am also interested in finding out who Robert
Sweete's family in England was - I believe he came to Jamestown in 1618.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
