I have an railroad map dated about 1878.  It shows the Norfolk line and doesn't show a Watkins Crossing in Sussex, Greenville, or adjoining counties.  --Sally Phillips

Usually, the Geographic Names Information System is a good source for finding places on the map.  You can get to the query page through this link:  http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic

Do not try to copy the link once you get there because they assign a temporary id number to the page and you won't be able to get back to the page.  Use the link above.

The site has both current maps and historic maps. It indicates alternate names as well as (historic) when the name is no longer used.  But sometimes, as in this case, it doesn't quite work the way it is suppose to work.  Sometimes, you have to designate whether it is a church, airport, bridge, ridge, populated place, etc.  The more specific you can be the more accurate it is.

I sent them a note asking for help about Watkins Crossing this morning and their answer to me came this afternoon.  They don't have Watkins Crossing in the system but are willing to update the system if we find it for them.  They have also forwarded it on to others who might be able to help, so all is not yet lost concerning this search through GNIS.

At any rate, it is a fairly good resource that is helpful most of the time.

Thank you for this inquiry. Unfortunately, we do not have any information regarding the location of Watkins Crossing in those two counties or anywhere in Virginia.

We can only suggest that you contact the local city or county government, the local historical society, or the local library.

We have included our colleagues at the regional centers of the U.S.
Geological Survey in case they have any information. Also, we have included the State Names Authority in case that organization has any information.

If you find reference to Watkins Crossing, we should like to know as well so that we can add an entry to the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the nation's official geographic names repository.

I?m looking for a historical railroad crossing:  Watkins Crossing in either Sussex or Greensville Counties in VA along the Norfolk Railroad line. I?m having no success on the site.  I?ve tried crossings, locale,
trail, civil, populated place and others.   Can you help?

Thanks,

Cynthia McDaniel

Hi, Can anyone tell me where Watkins Crossing is/was? I am assuming it was used to designate a rail cross on the Norfolk Railroad line
possibly in Greensville or Sussex County. My greatgrandfather, Rev. Dr. Frank L Mason was killed in an auto/train accident at this
location in 1923.

Thank you.
