You might want to check the Virginia pension information on the Library 
of Virginia site.  Maybe you can find clues in pensions of family and 
friends of what unit he might have served in. 

You might also want to find out if there is a list of prisoners for 
Point Lookout and Fort Delaware.  Maybe he died in prison  and is buried 
on site rather than at home.

I looked just now on the Hollywood Cemetery website and he does not 
appear to be either of the James Smiths buried there.  One is a James 
Edward and the other served in a company raised in Pittsylvania Co.

There are no Daniel or Thomas Smiths.
