Margie,

Chesterfield was formed from Henrico County in 1749 at which time the
orphan in question was an adult. You need to look in Henrico County for
the guardian records.

The guardianship was over the child's estate, not the child. The child
may live with their guardian or with their Mother if she is alive. If
they were be bound out to learn a trade and they would live with the
person to whom they were bound. They could live with a relative. They
could also move to another location.

You may want to borrow Henrico County, VA Reel 91 from The Library of
Virginia through Interlibrary Loan. This reel contains Orphan Court
Records for the period you are interested in seeing. Listed below is a
description of information on Reel 91.

Reel 91 [ILL} Orphan's Court, 1677 - 1739 c, 56 p. [Film of original.

Order Books that may be helpful in your research.

Subject: [VA-ROOTS] Orphans in Henrico/Chesterfield Co 1725

Question: When a person is given guardianship over a child, what
happens to the child, does the child move from Henrico Co to
Chesterfield and live with the guardian?

I am researching a family in Henrico Co 1721 to 1737, Bristol Parish
wardens gave guardianship to an uncle living in Chesterfield, but
assumingly the father died in 1721 and the mother died before 1737, the
child was born about 1718, would there be any guardianship records in
Chesterfield County?
