Where can I look for more information about the 36th Regiment, VA Infantry
that was formerly the 2nd Kanawha Regiment? Or who might have some
information on why this regiment was formerly the 2nd Kanawha Regiment?

I am assuming that the regiment was renamed after WV ceded to the Union side
and became a state in 1863, but what I assume may not be right.

I ask because I am researching James Madison Bland (b. 1845) to find his
parents. His granddaughter tells me that he served from VA as a Confederate
soldier.

I am currently looking at the ones in the adjacent counties of Giles and
Monroe. Monroe County became part of WV when WV became a state, while Giles
county remained in VA. Interestingly these counties hold multiple James M.
Blands and Madison Blands.

I can find only one James M. Bland serving in the Civil War from VA or WV on
the Soldiers and Sailors National Park Service website. He served in the
36th Regiment, VA Infantry (formerly the 2nd Kanawha Regiment/Infantry). I'm
wondering what the history was on which counties might have served in that
particular unit.

Of course, a soldier from WV could have fought for the Confederate side. And
a soldier from the Union side could have fought for the on the Union side.
But regardless, there was only James M. Bland that I've been able to find
online (I don't know if the online records are complete).
