Hello Everyone,

I recently unearthed some copies of material in : "Proceedings of the
Committees of Safety of Cumberland and Isle of Wight Counties Virginia,
1775-1776." Edited by H.R. McIlwaine. Printed as Part of the Report of the
Virginia State Library for the Year ending September 30, 1918. Richmond.
Davis Bottom, Superintendent of Public Printing 1919.

On September 16, 1775, that Committee (membership at end) passed the
following resolution (all caps are mine) : "Then the Committee proceeded to
appoint proper Persons to lay off this County in Districts, in Order to take
a List of ALL PERSONS WITHIN THE COUNTY, EITHER WHITE OR BLACK, MALE OR
FEMALE, ADULTS OR INFANTS for a general Survey agreeable to the Resolution of
the last Convention; Ordered, that Mr. Chairman, Mr. Mosby and Mr. George
Carrington junior do divided and lay off the County into twenty four proper
Districts for the Purpose aforesaid, and allot to each Member his proper
District. Resolved, that Cumberland Court House be the Place for the
Rendezvous of the Minute Men of this County after the Completion of the
Company."

I don't believe I've heard mention here or seen referenced elsewhere, any
such documents. I am assuming that other counties probably did the same?
Does anyone know if such a document might still exist? Have reference to it?
It would seem to be quite a find if it existed!

I do not have copies of all of the minutes for Cumberland Co., and I did a
poor job of copying some of the pages, but a tentative list of members of the
Committee on Safety in 1775 is as follows. There may be some exclusions on
this as the first election is not recorded:

Mr. Joseph CALLAND
George CARRINGTON, (Chairman)
Mr. George CARRINGTON junr.,
Mr. Joseph CARRINGTON
Mr. Richard EGGLESTON (not re-elected 1776)
Mr. William FLEMING
Mr. Carter Henry HARRISON
Mr. Edward HASKINS
Mr. Frederick HATCHER
Mr. Richard JAMES
Mr. Maurice LANGHORNE
Mr. Henry MACON
Mr. John MAYO
Mr. Littleberry MOSBY
Mr. John NETHERLAND
Mr. James PLEASANTS
Rev. John Hyde SAUNDERS, Clerk, (not re-elected 1776)
Mr. Robert SMITH
Mr. William SMITH
Mr. Benjamin WILSON
Mr. Charles WOODSON
Mr. John WOODSON

I have typed up the proceedings of two of the meetings September and October
1775, during which County Officers, and County Militia Captains, Lieutenants
and Ensigns were elected. Before the meeting concerning the militia officers
began, apparently there was a move (rejected) to close the proceedings from
the public, which I thought was interesting.

I will post these in two subsequent emails.

My best regards,
Janet (Baugh) Hunter
